The Journey Begins
On a clear morning in May, black asphalt rolls under the wheels of our rental car as we make our way from the beautiful city of Prague, across the sun-kissed countryside to the town of Kutna Hora. We couldn’t help but allow ourselves to be hypnotized by the green hills, lush pastures, and dazzling fields of flowers along the way. The excitement of Beginnings electrify the air, while our minds wander back, to the prelude of this Journey…
It has been more than a year of writing, dreaming, reaching out, waiting, overcoming language barriers, obtaining all the necessary permits for photoshoots and proper papers from the Bishopric for this project to take flight. Our heartfelt “thank you” to the Roman Catholic Parish Department of Kutna Hora for making this possible thus far.
But this story goes back even further, to the places in time when inspiration and ideas are born – nurtured by the drive to explore unusual places. From daydreams of Jan Svankmajer’s grainy film images, to the many other ossuaries we visited along our Eastern European travels, before passionately making our way to Kostnice Sedlec.
This is our tribute, to share the beauty, magic, reverence, and history of Sedlec Ossuary with the world, so that its story can be preserved for generations to come. We hope to connect past and future, through drawings, photos, writings, and many other exciting endeavors. And to let others see it and experience it – in ways they would have never thought possible.
…It seems surreal that we are finally approaching our morning destination. And now, with cameras, sketchbooks, and permits in hand, we see the roofs of Kutna Hora glistening on the horizon. Let our story begin!
